Export value of Latvian food and agricultural products reduced last year for the first time since 2009 – the value of food and agricultural products exported from Latvia in 2014 was 6% or EUR 138 million lower than in 2013 and stood at EUR 2.175 billion, as the Agriculture Ministry informed LETA.

According to the Agriculture Ministry's data, the value of imported food and agricultural products reduced 3.8% or EUR 87 million to EUR 2.179 billion last year.

Reductions in export of canola seeds and fish products accounted for large part of the reduction in the value of Latvia's export of food and agricultural products in 2014.

The Agriculture Ministry's data also show that 51% of exports of food and agricultural products from Latvia went to the European Union member states in 2014, and 49% to third countries.

30% of Latvia's export of food and agricultural products went to Russia last year. This is almost 2% or EUR 11 million less than in 2013.

Latvia's food and agricultural products were exported to all 27 EU member states last year, with the largest part – 35% of food and agricultural products export to the EU – going to Lithuania.

Latvian food exports to Lithuania, however, decreased 6%. Exports to Estonia decreased 19%, to Germany – 33%, and to Poland – 34%.

On the other hand, Latvia exported more food and agricultural products to Kazakhstan, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Congo, Kenya, and Haiti.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, even with the decrease in the export value in 2014, export of food and agricultural products made up 19.8% of the total value of Latvia's exports last year.
