From 2000 to 2014, a total of 35 children died of infections in Latvia because they were not vaccinated, according to Dace Gardovska, Director of the Clinic of Children's Diseases at the Children's Clinical University Hospital, cites LETA.

Students from Riga Stradins University have established that during the past ten years, the Children's Hospital has treated more than 700 children with infections that could have been prevented by state-funded vaccinations.

On average, these children spent eight days at hospital, and 96% of them required intravenous therapy. Furthermore, every tenth child suffering from diphtheria or whooping cough had to be placed in the intensive care unit. According to Gardovska, 98% of them required special therapy.

Among the sick children were those who could not have been vaccinated due to medical reasons, and those who were denied vaccinations by their parents.

Gardovska explained that in order to protect society from epidemics, the proportion of individuals vaccinated against a particular infection ought to be at least 95%.

In order to educate parents about the necessity of vaccinations, the hospital has established the Children's Vaccination Center. The center provides vaccinations for patients, as well as educates parents about vaccinations.
