Number of marriages and births keep increasing over 4 years in Latvia
Since 2011 there is a positive birth rate trend in Latvia – from 18.8 thsd children born in 2011 to 21.5 thsd in 2014. Births was observed also in the first three months of 2015, when 5 226 newborns were registered in the country, which is 158 babies or 3% more than in the first quarter of 2014.
28.4 thsd persons passed away in 2014, and it is 250 persons fewer than in 2013. There were 14.3 deaths per 1000 population in 2014, and this number has not changed as compared to 2013. However, mortality has grown during the first three months of this year, since already 7 762 persons have died this year, and it is 349 persons or 4.7% more than in the first quarter of the previous year.
With the number of births lagging behind the number of deaths, natural increase in Latvia since 1991 has been negative. During the first three months of 2015 the number of population in Latvia decreased by 2 536 persons (during the first quarter of 2014 – by 2 345), with the number of deaths exceeding the number of births.

The preliminary number of population in Latvia on 1 April 2014 accounted for 1 million 989.3 thsd people.
