In February, the number of tourists in Estonian hotels decreased by 1%

According to Statistics Estonia, 177,000 tourists used the services of accommodation establishments in February 2015, which is 1% fewer than in February 2014. The number of foreign tourists decreased and the number of domestic tourists increased.

In February, 93,000 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments which was 19% fewer than in February of the previous year. The number of foreign tourists decreased mainly due to a drop in the number of tourists arriving from Russia and Finland. The number of tourists from Finland, accounting for 52% of the total number of accommodated foreign tourists in February, decreased by 9%. Compared to February of the previous year, 42% fewer tourists arrived from Russia. Even the increasing number of tourists from many European countries was not able to compensate for this decrease. Compared to February 2014, the number of tourists from Latvia and Lithuania increased by 26% and 4%, respectively. Also, more tourists arrived from the United Kingdom, Germany and Norway. The number of tourists from Asian countries increased by nearly a third.

 

In February, 84,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 10% more than in February of the previous year. 59% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 24% were on a business trip. Of the domestic tourists using the services of accommodation establishments, 30% stayed in Harju county, 16% in Pärnu county, 10% in Ida-Viru county and 10% in Valga county. More domestic tourists than in February of the previous year stayed in the accommodation establishments of Harju, Valga and Ida-Viru counties. The number of accommodated domestic tourists in Pärnu county stayed at the previous year’s level.

 

In February, 892 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 18,000 rooms and 41,000 beds were available for tourists. 36% of the rooms and 28% of the beds were occupied. The average cost of a guest night was 32 euros, which was 2 euros more expensive than in February 2014. The average cost of a guest night was higher than the Estonian average in Harju county, where the average cost of a guest night was 37 euros. The average cost of a guest night was 24 euros in Pärnu county, 29 euros in Tartu county and 30 euros in Ida-Viru county.
