In 2014, 16 people lost their lives in a work-related accident in Estonia; there were altogether 4,635 occupational accidents, which is nearly 11% more than the previous year, said the Director General of the Labour Inspectorate Maret Maripuu, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"One reason is certainly that less is concealed. Both employers and employees are more aware and they inform of a work-related accident. Public administration and state defense, construction, metal industry and trade continue to be in the forefront," said Maripuu.

The number of minor accidents at work has increased to more than 3,700 cases, while the number of serious accidents at work last year was just under 900. 16 cases of work-related deaths were recorded.

Mostly young men get into work-related accidents, due to taking excessive risks, or older women, due to lack of attention caused by long-term routine. Labour Inspectorate estimates that ultimately the main cause of the accidents in neglect and lack of preparation for employees.

Estonian Labour Inspection registered 4,180 work-related accidents in 2013, 3,385 of the accidents were light, 775 ended with serious injuries and 20 ended with death.
