Preliminary results: SocDems lead in Lithuania's municipal, mayoral elections

According to the first preliminary mayoral election results published by the Central Electoral Commission (VRK), the Social Democrats have the most of mayoral leaders – 16, reports LETA/ELTA.

The following parties on the mayoral election leader's list are the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (9), the Liberal Movement (8), the Labour Party (5), the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union, the party Order and Justice, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and Russian Alliance (4 each).

 

According to preliminary results from 598 polling stations (2,003 available in total), the Social Democrats' candidates lead in Druskininkai, Marijampole, the districts of Akmene, Jonava, Joniskis, Kelme, and Klaipeda.

 

Conservatives are the leaders in the districts of Alytus, Anyksciai, Kretinga, Kupiskis, and Moletai.

 

Visvaldas Matijosaitis, leader of the public election committee United Kauna, is leading in Kaunas.

 

In Vilnius, Valdemar Tomasevski from the Electoral Action of Poles was leading at first but he has been surpassed by the Liberal Remigijus Simasius.

 

Another Liberal – Vytautas Grubliauskas – is leading in Klaipeda city.

 

The latest election results show that the new mayors of some of the Lithuanian municipalities are already clear.

 

Former Police Commissioner General Vytautas Grigaravicius will become Alytus mayor as he has received 67.34% of votes.

 

Social Democrat Ricardas Malinauskas will again head Druskininkai (72.46%), another Social Democrat – Nijole Dirginciene – has become the mayor of Birstonas (76.05%).

 

Henrikas Siaudinis, a representative of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union, has been re-elected for the second term as Mayor of Ignalina District.

 

Jonava district will be headed for another term by Social Democrat Mindaugas Sinkevicius, who received 71.52% of votes.

 

Valerijus Makunas has been re-elected Mayor of Kaunas District (55.66%).

 

Kedainiai District will be headed by the Labour Party's Nijole Naujokiene (50.84%).

 

Conservative Arturas Margelis has been re-elected Mayor of Lazdijai District (53.01%).

 

Social Democrat Vidmantas Brazys has been re-elected in Marijampole (56.20%).

 

Conservative Stasys Zvinys has been re-elected in Moletai District (62.89%).

 

Neringa has re-elected Social Democrat Darius Jasaitis (68.01%).

 

Virginijus Komskis has been re-elected Mayor of Pagegiai (54.02%).

 

Conservative Sarunas Vaitkus has been re-elected in Palanga (73.68%).

 

Pasvalys District will be headed again by Conservative Gintautas Geguzinskas (59.01%).

 

Antanas Cerneckis of the Liberals' Movement has been re-elected to head Rietavas municipality (76.67%).

 

Salcininkai District will be headed by Zdislav Palevic of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance Block of Valdemar Tomasevski (79.26%).

 

Utena District will be headed by Social Democrat Alvydas Katinas (59.44%).

 

Algis Kaseta of the Liberals' Movement has been elected Mayor of Varena District (51.60%).

 

Vilnius District municipality will be headed again by Marija Rekst of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance Block of Valdemar Tomasevski (61.29%).

 

As 2,001 of 2,003 polling districts have submitted voting results, it is clear that the Social Democratic Party has won 20 mayoral seats.

 

The Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (Conservatives) has won 10 seats.

 

The Liberals' Movement – 10, the Labour Party – 5, public election committees – 5, Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union – 4, the Party Order and Justice – 2, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance Block of Valdemar Tomasevski – 2, the Republican Party 1, Lithuanian Liberty Union (liberals) – 1.
