59.1% population in Latvia were employed in 2014

Compared to 2013 employment rate of both – men and women increased in 2014 – by 1.3 and 0.7 percentage points, respectively. The share of women in the total number of employed persons was slightly higher than of men – 50.4% and 49.6%, respectively.
In 2014 the number of persons employed increased in transport and storage sector, as well as in construction, while agriculture, forestry and fishing, education and manufacturing sector witnessed the largest drop in the number of employed persons.
In the 4th quarter of 2014 there were 882.1 thsd employed persons in Latvia, and compared to the 3rd quarter of 2014 this number has slightly decreased – by 3.6 thsd or 0.4%. In turn, employment rate has not changed, and already for three consecutive quarters it is 59.3%.
In the 4th quarter of 2013 employment rate in Latvia was only slightly higher than in Lithuania (59.1%), but lower than in Estonia (63.6%). Besides, already since 2013 employment in Latvia has been above the average employment rate of EU-28.

In 2014, 32.5% of young people aged 15 – 24 were employed, and it is 2.3 percentage points more than in 2013. In the 4th quarter of 2014 there were 71.0 thsd employed persons aged 15 – 24 in Latvia, and compared to the previous quarter this number has slightly grown – by 1.5 thsd or 2.2%.
Information obtained from the survey shows that in 2014 as compared to 2013, the share of employees receiving wages and salaries of up to EUR 285 after taxes decreased by 9.8 percentage points. The most significant growth (of 5.2 percentage points) was recorded in the share of persons the labour remuneration of which was from EUR 285.01 to EUR 450.00 after taxes.

Within the framework of the Labour Force Survey 18.8 thsd households were surveyed in 2014, interviewing 31.4 thsd persons aged 15 –74. In the 4th quarter of 2014 the survey was carried out in 4.8 thsd households, interviewing 7.9 thsd persons aged 15 –74.
