Consumer optimism rising in Baltic countries at end-2014

Consumer optimism in the Baltic countries was slightly higher in the last quarter of 2014 than in the same period of 2013, according to the latest study of consumer mood and habits, carried out by the Nielsen company, cites LETA.

Lithuanians were the most optimistic, registering an index of 87. The index for Estonia is 84 and for Latvia 81. All three are higher than Europe's average index of 76.

 

Almost half of respondents in Latvia – 48% said they believed there was economic recession in Latvia. A year ago the figure was 63%. The proportion of those who believe their country is going through economic recession has also decreased in Lithuania and Estonia – from 49% to 43% and from 57% to 52% respectively.

 

24% of residents in Latvia, 32% in Lithuania and 35% in Estonia believe there will be good job opportunities in the next twelve months. In 2013, the respective figures were 21%, 27% and 29%. As for individual financial situation, residents' optimism has slightly increased in Latvia and Estonia but slightly decreased in Lithuania.

 

In both Latvia and Estonia, 42% of respondents said they considered their financial situation for the next twelve years as good, as compared to 39% in Latvia and 36% in Estonia in the fourth quarter of 2013. In Lithuania, the proportion of optimists has decreased from 43% to 40%.

 

The latest Nielsen study was done in November 2014, when over 30,000 consumers in sixty countries were interviewed.
