Latvia still behind the neighbors in economic freedom index 2015

Latvia is ranked 37th in terms of economic freedom worldwide, according to the 2015 Index of Economic Freedom by the "Heritage Foundation" think tank and "The Wall Street Journal".

A year ago, Latvia was ranked 42nd.

 

Hong Kong remains the world's most free economy, followed by Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Canada, Chile, Estonia, Ireland and Mauritius. Lithuania is ranked 15th.



 

North Korea, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Iran and Eritrea are at the bottom of the index.

 

The index scores 178 world nations on various factors of economic freedom: business freedom, trade freedom, monetary freedom, freedom from government, fiscal freedom, property rights, investment freedom, financial freedom, freedom from corruption, labor freedom.

 

A score of 100 signifies an economic environment or set of policies that is most conducive to economic freedom. In the latest index, Hong Kong's rating is 89.6, Estonia is rated 76.8, Lithuania – 74.7, Latvia – 69.7.

 

North Korea is rated at 1.3

 

The level of economic freedom in Latvia in 2015 makes 69.7 points, and this is still the best result of Latvia in this study, and 1 point higher than last year. Improvement was noted in 4 of 10 indicators of economic freedom: freedom from corruption, government spending, monetary freedom and freedom of trade.

 

The Estonian and Lithuanian economies are referred to as "mostly free", whereas the Latvian economy is "moderately free".
