Latvia registers substantial drop in infant mortality

Latvia has registered a substantial drop in its infant mortality rate, according to a report by the Welfare Ministry, cites LETA.
Infant mortality in 2013 was 4.5 per 1,000 births, in 2012 – 6.4 per 1,000 births, in 2011 – 6.7 per 1,000 births, in 2010 – 5.7 per 1,000 births, in 2009 – 7.7 per 1,000 births, in 2008 – 6.7 per 1,000 births, in 2007 – 8.8 per 1,000 births.
The highest infant mortality rate in Latvia was registered in 2000 and 2001 – 10.4 and 11.1 deaths per 1,000 births, respectively.
The ministry informs that despite the improvement in the infant mortality statistics, Latvia still has the highest infant mortality rate in the Baltics.
