BC, Riga, 15.01.2015.Print version
About one-third of Latvians living abroad said they would be ready to return to Latvia if they could earn a monthly salary of about EUR 1,000, informs LETA.

This according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Latvia.

About half of Latvian emigrants said that they would be satisfied with a monthly salary of about EUR 1,000, while three-fourths of respondents said that a monthly salary of EUR 1,500 would motivate them to return to Latvia.

The authors of the study indicate that the main reasons why people choose to emigrate are the financial difficulties they face living here, an opportunity to earn more abroad, and a desire to improve one's quality of life. Respondents also said that they wish to save for retirement and that they are unable to pay back their bank loans.

The authors of the study are urging the government to consider improvements in the tax system, as a lot of Latvians emigrants were critical of it and mentioned it as one of the reasons why they left.

A total of 14,068 Latvian living in 118 countries participated in the survey.
