Lithuanian president supports proposal to increase minimum pay again

BC, Vilnius, 08.01.2015.Print version
Lithuanian leader Dalia Grybauskaite supports the proposal to increase the minimum monthly wage to EUR 325 as of 1 July, 2015, reports LETA/ELTA.

"I would be in favour of this increase because it is possible to be done and it would be good for our economy," she said on Wednesday, during her annual press conference.

Grybauskaite did not criticise this year's state budget for over optimistic economic growth forecast of 3.1% of GDP. Asked if the minimum monthly wage increase to EUR 325 is possible if economic growth is not as high, the president stressed that the implementation of the budget and the minimum monthly wage have nothing in common. According to the president, if there is a need to reduce budgetary expenditure, then state investment programme could be cut.

As reported, parties of the ruling coalition had decided to increase the minimum monthly wage to EUR 325 from 1 July. Commenting on this Grybauskaite had emphasised that such wages would still be the lowest in Lithuania of all three Baltic States thus should be increased every year.

The minimum monthly pay in Lithuania currently stands at EUR 300. Meanwhile, in Estonia it is EUR 355, in Latvia EUR 320 and in Poland EUR 397.
