Number of marriages keeps increasing, mortality declines in Latvia in 11 months

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in the first eleven months of this year 11 647 marriages were registered in Latvia, and it is 916 marriages or almost 9% more than in first eleven months of 2013.

In November 2014 there were 640 marriages concluded in the country (40 marriages more than a year ago).

 

During the eleven months of this year 19 752 newborns were registered in the country, which is 772 babies more than in the first eleven months of 2013. In November 2014, 1 561 babies were born in Latvia (32 children fewer than in November 2013).

 

Mortality keeps declining – 25 719 persons passed away during the eleven months of this year, and it is 515 persons or 2% less than in the corresponding period of 2013. 2 156 persons deceased in November 2014 (96 persons fewer than in November 2013).

With the number of births still lagging behind the number of deaths, natural increase in Latvia remains negative. In the eleven months of 2014, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, the number of Latvian residents decreased by 5 967 persons (in January – November 2013 – by 7 254).


The provisional number of population in Latvia on 1 December 2014 accounted for 1 million 989.5 thousand people.
