Number of low-income earners decreases in November in Latvia

The number of low-income earners in Latvia was 63,705 in November 2014, which is 1,055 more than one month earlier, according to information provided by the Welfare Ministry, cites LETA.

At the beginning of the year, a total of 83,273 people in Latvia were classified as low-income earners.

 

Last month, the proportion of low-income earners in Latvia made 3.2% of all residents of Latvia. Their proportion in September – 3.28%, in October – 3.25%.

 

Despite the fact that the number of low-income earners has been reducing in the country, the amount of money distributed in state benefits has increased. Municipalities spent EUR 3,910,372 on social support allowances in November, in October – EUR 3,457,096.

 

Meanwhile, the number of state benefit recipients increased by 8,028, amounting to 68,291 people.

 

The ministry's representative Marika Kupce told LETA that these changes are of seasonal character – in the winter, more people apply for heating benefits.

 

The largest amount of state allowances was distributed in housing benefits – EUR 1,204,862.
