Usakovs compares situation in Latvia with Soviet-era stagnation

BC, Riga, 22.12.2014.Print version
Addressing the Harmony party congress on December 20th, Riga mayor and the party's chairman Nils Usakovs compared the current situation in Latvia with Soviet-era stagnation, reports LETA.

''Unfortunately, this stagnation reminds me of the Soviet times, and it looks like our government is being headed by a Brezhnev in a skirt,'' he said.

He expressed the point of view that the approved 2015 budget has not taken into account a possible economic crisis scenario, and there are no instruments that help entrepreneurs and needy persons.

Usakovs said that in such a situation, the right leaning parties feel satisfied with themselves, and added that Harmony has many responsibilities to its voters and all of the Latvian people in such a situation.

Speaking about the election results, Usakovs said that Harmony can feel proud of itself, and it endured huge press from different sides, as some called the party's ''Moscow's hand'', while others ''traitors to the interests of Russians''.

In a reply to the comments directed towards he by Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony) today, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) says that she personally welcomes constructive criticism based on facts.

''Speaking about story book characters, we all can be compared to one or another. One might be called a ''wolf in a skirt'', while another ''Pinnochio'', who has a small but gradually growing nose. Now, let us remember why his nose is growing,'' Straujuma said through her press secretary Aiva Rozenberga.
