Latvia records EU's largest reduction in the number of employed persons in Q3

The number of employed persons reduced 1.7% in Latvia in the third quarter of 2014, compared to the previous quarter – the largest reduction in the European Union, according to the latest data from the EU's statistical bureau Eurostat, cites LETA.

Quarter-on-quarter reduction were registered in only three other countries – Malta – by 0.8%, Finland – by 0.3%, and Estonia – by 0.2%.

 

In Denmark and France employment numbers stayed the same, but increased in all other countries from which data was available.

 

The steepest quarter-on-quarter increase in employment was registered in Greece – by 1.7%, Lithuania – by 1.5%, and Portugal – by 1.4%.

 

Employment in the EU increased by 0.3% in the third quarter, but in the eurozone – by 0.2%.

 

Eurostat estimates that 226.9 million men and women were employed in the EU in the third quarter of 2014, of which 148.2 million were employed in the euro area.

 

Meanwhile, compared to the third quarter of 2013, the number of employed person in the EU increased by 0.9%, but in the eurozone – by 0.6%.

 

Year-on-year reductions in employment were only registered in Latvia – by three%, and the Netherlands – by 0.3%.

 

Meanwhile, the steepest year-on-year increase was recorded in Hungary – by 3.7%, Lithuania – by 3%, and Great Britain – by 2.3%.
