Number of cyber attacks increasing in Latvia in 2014

BC, Riga, 10.12.2014.Print version
The number of cyber attacks against Latvia is increasing, nevertheless, Latvian specialists are on constant alert, successfully fending the attacks off, the head of the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association, Signe Balina said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" this morning, cites LETA.

With Latvia becoming the next presiding country of the Council of the European Union, its cyber security challenges will be greater than what Lithuania faced during its presidency, Balina stressed.

"It is clear that there will be attacks, and that they are happening all the time. Discussions are focusing on attacks by one particular country, however, the digital world is united, and it is therefore impossible to determine where the attacks are coming from," Balina explained.

She believes that state information systems, as well as larger private information systems, are the main risk areas.

There were more than 25,000 cases of cyber attacks on Lithuania last year.

Lithuania was the presiding country of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2013.
