Latvian Infogr.am buys Brazilian medium VisuaLoop

Latvian company Infogr.am has acquired the Brazilian medium VisuaLoop, as the founder of Infogr.am Uldis Leiterts announced today, reports LETA.

Leiterts did not disclose the sum of the deal, although he did say that it was a six-figure amount.


The acquisition agreement was signed in the summer of 2014, when the website was getting redesigned.


VisuaLoop deals with data journalism, infographics, reviews, interviews, tutorials, and cartography.


Leiterts said that after the deal is closed, Infogr.am will have no control of the content of VisuaLoop. "We wish to keep this medium independent."


Founder of VisuaLoop Tiago Veloso will remain in the company, among other data visualization specialists - Alberto Cairo, Mariana Santos, and Santiago Ortiz. Nika Aleksejeva will monitor VisuaLoop activities. The team could likely expand in the future.


VisuaLoop has existed for almost six years. It began operating as a data visualization blog, which earned recognition among the industry's specialists.


Veloso said that after joining Infogr.am, the medium will be able to focus more on its work and on attracting new clients.


The Infogr.am service is currently available in five languages - English, Latvian, Russian, Japanese, and Portuguese. The medium plans to add French in the near future.


In February 2014, Infogr.am received the largest investment in Latvia's history EUR 1.34 million. The funding came from three investors Berlin-based Point Nine Capital, London-based Connect Ventures, and Hamburg-based HackFwd. The company's value reached EUR 5.25 million after the investment. Infogr.am currently has of a team of 30 people in Riga and San Francisco.

 

Infogr.am is the developer of an online data visualization tool, which allows users to use and publish data and infographics online in a convenient and quick way. The service is used by 1.5 million journalists, non-governmental organizations, activists, communication professionals, teachers, students all over the world, including The Huffington Post, Al Jazeera, Amnesty International, and others.

 

Infogr.am was founded by Uldis Leiterts, Raimonds Kaze, and Alise Semjonova in February 2012.
