IT experts blame Estonian Internet Foundation for the failed domain reform

In the course of a short period of time, hundreds of IT specialists have expressed their support for a public petition that blames the Estonian Internet Foundation for a failed domain reform and demands that the management of the foundation resign from their positions, writes LETA/Postimees Online.

Three IT experts – Tõnu Samuel, Jaan Jänesmäe and Jaagup Irve – issued a public statement, noting that yet again the Estonian Internet Foundation has consistently ignored the real needs of the internet community in Estonia.

“Despite the declarations with promises to represent the Estonian internet community, the foundation cannot be bothered to communicate with the said community or take its views into account,” read the public petition. The three petitioners noted that the foundation’s leadership has been pointing out the small size of Estonia that has prompted it to establish high prices on registered internet domains. They remarked that according to the new order, registering of domains is unjustifiably expensive and the foundation charges 285 kroons for registering one domain.

“EENet that had thus far administered .ee domains and born all the related expenses has disclosed on its website that the cost price of registering a domain is 45 kroons per year and VAT,” read the public letter.

Tõnu Samuel stated that although the petition is rather recent, it has already gained the support of hundreds of persons in the IT circles.
