Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius on March 6 announced that US IT giant IBM is considering opening of a research and development department in Lithuania, The Lithuanian Tribune reports.

Kubilius said during the Conservative party's board meeting on March 6: "Yesterday (March 5) we met with an IBM delegation, which plans to found a research and development department [in Lithuania]."

According to him, it is most likely that opening of an IBM centre might take about a year.

Kubilius pointed out that his delegation's trip to the US had a direct impact on the IBM's decision, writes LETA/ELTA.

Prime Minister said to his party colleagues: "It looks like we managed to persuade representatives of largest companies during meetings in the framework of the US visit that Lithuania is worthy of their investments."

As reported, on Friday Barclays Technology Centre was officially opened on the left bank of the river Neris – the fourth in the world, providing information technologies (IT) services to Barclays' global retail business unit.
