The head of the Estonian Broadband Development Foundation Olav Harjo stated that the construction of the next generation data communications network across the entire Estonia will begin in spring 2010, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

The foundation’s objective is to build a network of fibre-optic cables across Estonia that would make it possible by the year 2015 for all households, enterprises and institutions to have access to the broadband network with the data connection speed of up to 100 Mbit/s.

Harjo stated that technical preparatory works are already carried out to launch the EstWin project. Most important activities, including those related to financing of the project, will take place in the beginning of next year.

Money for next year’s activities will be applied for through different European structural funds. The foundation hopes to get 350 million kroons from the EU structural funds for the EstWin project next year.

The estimated cost of the entire project is up to 6 billion kroons.
