Smartpost, an investment project of the Estonian state-owned Development Fund, started providing its postal services in Milan, Italy, Postimees/LETA writes.

The red set of self-service postal boxes belonging to Smartpost started operating last week in a shopping centre in Milan.

CEO of the self-service postage automats Indrek Oolup said that the enterprise sold its technology as well as the postal automats, made in Estonia, to SDA Express Courier, a subsidiary of the Italian postal company.

According to Oolup, if the pilot project in Milan is successful, Smartpost may earn hundreds of millions of kroons per year in Italy as then the red postal boxes would be erected in many places in Italy. Italian package services market is fifth-largest in Europe and the Italian post is implementing actively modern technologies to stay competitive.

Smartpost is currently also negotiating with different enterprises and postal companies in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Russia, Egypt, Canada and in Latvia.

The company has 36 postal box sets in different shopping centres and elsewhere in Estonia. The simplicity of use is the advantage of the self-service postal boxes technology for people and low costs are the advantage for postal firms. People get an SMS on their mobile phone when their package arrives, they insert the code given to them into a postal box and can get their package from the box. People can also send packages from the Smartpost postal boxes, by paying with bank card.

The Estonian Development Fund invested 13.4 million kroons to start up the Smartpost business in Estonia.
