A day before the European Parliament's vote on a copyright directive in the digital single market, visitors have been blocked from the Latvian version of Wikipedia and Wikipedia versions in other European Union languages, reports LETA.

The Latvian version of Wikipedia currently informs visitors about the upcoming EP vote and the danger it poses to Internet freedom, and says that if the new directive is approved, Wikipedia could be at risk of closing.

The statement says that more than 70 computer scientists have raised objections to the new directive, including Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, as well as 169 academics and scientists, 147 organizations, including human rights, press freedom, research and technology organizations, and Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization developing open content projects, including Wikipedia.

The statement on the Latvian version of Wikipedia urges all European Parliament members to vote against the proposed legislation.
