Latvia unaffected by latest European-wide ransomware attack for now

For the time being there are no reports suggesting that Latvia, too, has been hit by the latest ransomware attack that it affecting computers across Europe, Svetlana Amberga, a representative of the Latvian Information Technology Security Incident Response Institution Cert.lv, told LETA.

She said that the wave of attacks started in the afternoon, and that information on possible hacking attempts was still being gathered in Latvia. “For the time being, there have been no reports of the attack affecting Latvia as well,” Amberga said.


The Cert.lv representative said, however, that the wave of cyberattacks might still continue tonight and on Wednesday morning.


Petya, a new ransomware has been striking computer systems across Europe on Tuesday, with Ukraine being hit by the virus especially hard. The attack, which began at around 2 p.m. Latvian time, initially targeted companies in Ukraine and Russia, but later spread also to Western Europe.


The latest wave of cyberattacks comes at a time when the world is still reeling from the global attack of WannaCry ransomware in May.
