Detectors have cut number of bad smell complaints severalfold

The 20 odor sensors, or e-noses, installed in different places in the area of the port of Muuga near Tallinn this spring have reduced the number of bad smell complaints from local residents severalfold, Port of Tallinn CEO Valdo Kalm said LETA/BNS.

"Everything is very, very good as far as e-noses go, the number of complaints has fallen five or six times," told Kalm.

He said the installation of the detectors is a pilot project and the port company will make a detailed summary at the end of the year.

In spring 20 e-noses and four wind sensors were installed in the port of Muuga area. Officials said in July three months was too short a time to make any conclusions and that trials and fine-tuning of the devices will take half a year.

The odor sensors reacted to changes in air quality a couple of times in March and April, but connections between the readings and specific activities have not been established yet, Erik Teinemaa, head of the Estonian Environmental Research Center's air quality management department, said.

A similar system has been in operation at the Dutch port of Rotterdam already for eight years and the number of residents' complaints there has dropped from 600 to 20 during this period.
