Today, within the framework of the visit to China, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma arrived at the North China Science and Technology Centre where the Latvia – China Academic Exchange Centre was opened in September 2015. The establishment of this centre is a part of 16+1 cooperation format initiative "One Belt, One Road" of Central and Eastern European countries and China, reports BC press secretary to the Prime Minister Aiva Rozenberga.

On the Latvian side, the Centre's contact point is the Department of Political Science of the University of Latvia that will coordinate the exchange and cooperation projects with the higher education establishments of Latvia in the fields of research and culture.

During the visit to the Institute, the Prime Minister stressed that "One Belt, One Road" initiative opens up possibilities for cooperation between Latvia and China, not only in the fields of transport and logistics, but also in education and research. L. Straujuma also presented the Latvia-China Academic Exchange Centre with a number of books about Latvia.

In her address to the management and students of the Institute, Prof. Žaneta Ozoliņa, Head of the Foreign Affairs Council of Latvia, stressed that Latvia can offer the Chinese students a training course on EU topics already in the spring semester. The Latvian students might also be interested in obtaining additional education in China. Another priority direction for cooperation between Latvia and China mentioned by Z. Ozoliņa is education and research exchanges on public health and crisis management issues, on which a joint conference will be held in Latvia next year.

As has been reported, the Prime Minister participates in events of 16+1 cooperation format held this week in China, meets the representatives of Chinese companies, and a meeting with the President and the Prime Minister of China is scheduled for today.
