Europe's digital single market will probably increase mobile communication prices in Latvia

BC, Riga, 08.05.2015.Print version
Implementing Europe's digital single market will probably increase mobile communication prices in Latvia, the leading Latvian mobile communications operators told LETA.

CEO of Latvijas Mobilais Telefons Juris Binde says that the digital single market is an imaginary thing, as it is important to take into account that the markets are different in each country. For example, the Latvian market cannot be compared with the Spanish market, as they differ in both size and mentality.

"Roaming charges is what needs to be regulated, especially data transmission, which first needs to be balanced out. If the former commissioner's idea is implemented, we will definitely have to pay more to others, which would inevitably lead to increased local tariffs," says Binde. "Latvian residents do not need the dreams about a single market."

Meanwhile, CEO of Tele2 Valdis Vancovics believes that the idea about better mobile communications in Europe is great, however, the practical implementation of Europe's digital single market project is still rather obscure, and nothing indicates that further developments will be swift.

Commenting on Latvia's situation, Vancovics says that Latvia already has some of the lowest mobile communication prices in Europe, and with regard to the digital single market, changes in Latvia will not be as positive as in other countries, where the local mobile communication prices are significantly higher.
