Modern cyber spying software being used against Lithuanian institutions

BC, Vilnius, 31.03.2015.Print version
Director of the Second Investigation Department under the Ministry of National Defence (AOTD), Alvydas Siuparis, says that extremely complex spyware was used to spy on the computer infrastructure of Lithuanian institutions, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to the director, all institutions that came under cyber attacks were informed about cyber espionage carried out against them by foreign intelligence agencies. Heads of these institutions are aware about spyware found in their networks. The director of the AOTD has not revealed how many and what kind of computers were infected and what sort of information might have been stolen.

"This was highly sophisticated spying software and a very high level of professionalism is needed in order to find it," Siuparis said at the Seimas.

Head of the State Security Department (VSD), Gediminas Grina, says that any computer connected to the internet may be infected, whereas commercial protection measures rarely protect against modern spying software.

As reported, on Monday the VSD and the AOTD published their reports about threats to Lithuania's national security. It is stated in the reports that in 2014 spyware was found in many computers of state institutions and household users.
