About 400 cyber attacks registered in Latvia in 2014

Latvia came under about 400 cyber attacks in 2014, said State Police Chief Ints Kuzis during European Police College (CEPOL) conference on cyber crimes in Jurmala on March 25, reports LETA.

Kuzis stressed that the actual number is much higher, as it is impossible to record all attacks due to their clandestine nature and other specifics. In 2014, Latvia registered more than 3,000 incidents of high priority and almost half a million – low priority. "The number of cyber attacks is growing fast," Kuzis stressed.

According to Kuzis, among the most notable cyber attacks are hacking of computer systems, data theft, violation of copyright, and sexual harassment of minors.

He also said that without international cooperation, the country is unable to fight against these attacks on its own. Kuzis also said that the law enforcement institutions require modern tools in order to successfully fight this problem.

"Online crime is a direct threat against the human rights, and it affects people in the entire world. The nature of these crimes has no national borders, which is why we require appropriate international action," Kuzis said.

The police chief emphasized that cyber investigation is an expensive, time-consuming, and complicated process. It is simply impossible to investigate every single case, as their numbers reach more than a million a day, he said.

The CEPOL conference "Cybercrime – Strategic level" began in the city of Jurmala yesterday. The aim of the conference is to improve cooperation and harmonize the methods of investigation used by law enforcement authorities in the EU Member States, as well as to improve public-private partnerships and cooperation with the Eastern Partnership and candidate countries in the fight against cyber crime.
