Government approves Latvia's cooperation with European Space Agency during next 5-year period

BC, Riga, 28.01.2015.Print version
The government decided in principle yesterday that Latvia would keep its status of the European Space Agency's (ESA) European Cooperating State for the next five-year period, but the required funding is yet to be allocated, reports LETA.

The Education and Science Ministry has requested EUR 1.38 million to be allotted from the state budget to cover the cost of Latvia's cooperation with the ESA, but several ministers objected that the funds would be taken from the government's emergency funds, which means that the financing will have to be allotted from other ministries' budgets.

ESA membership fees and fees paid by cooperating states are recalculated annually based on inflation in Europe in the preceding year.

After signing the ESA Plan For European Cooperating State (PECS Charter) later this year, Latvia will participate in such ESA activities as earth observation, space technologies, education – in each of these areas Latvia has agreed to implement several specific projects.
